Hardwood Floors - Care and Maintenance

Top

Hardwood floors are a lifetime investment and decisions concerning them should not be taken lightly. They repay a little care with a lifetime of value. When you first glimpse at a solid hardwood floor, you sense richness, warmth and natural beauty. Gradually, you get to know its distinct personality, visual harmonies and the traces of history in the forest and in your home. Solid hardwood floors are among the most beautiful as well as the easiest to keep clean. Protect their elegance and character with simple, everyday cleaning techniques. Also, it’s important to know how to prevent damage to your hardwood floors. By following these simple care and maintenance tips you not only get the maximum life and value of your floor, but also years and years of beauty and enjoyment.

Always follow specific manufacturer cleaning and maintenance instructions, as different products may require different procedures of care. Some manufacturers require these specific procedures to be followed in order to maintain product warranty. Failure to do so could void this warranty. The following are generalized, basic tips of maintenance. Please refer to your customer brochure for specific product care. If you do not have this please ask us for it.

Regularly sweep or vacuum your floor to prevent sand and dust from   accumulating and scratching the finish. Be sure to use a soft suitable broom and only vacuum attachments that will not harm the floor.  Place rugs inside entrances and any areas that are sources of sand, dust and/or water. Use only indoor rugs that specify they are suitable for use on hardwood flooring. Many rubber-backed rugs contain chemicals that can damage the finish.

Keep relative humidity levels in your home between 40% and 50%. In summer, when it is especially humid, use air-conditioning and/or use a dehumidifier if necessary. In winter, when the air is dryer, use a humidifier if necessary. Although all solid wood floors will expand and contract, properly monitoring these conditions will keep the floors expansion and contraction to a minimum reducing the event of unattractive gaps and cupping or warping. Maintaining the proper humidity conditions is the responsibility of the customer.

While most spills will not harm the surface if quickly addressed, it is advisable to promptly wipe up with a dry cloth or paper towels. The spill should then be cleaned with a recommended cleaner. Never allow water or any liquid to puddle on your floor. Also be careful watering plants that the water does not leak out of the bottom.  Water and wood do not mix.  Moisture is the number one enemy of wood floors. Always pay special attention to ensure that accidents don’t happen. Water damages are costly to repair and under no circumstances covered under any warranty. This is the responsibility of the customer.

Never use wax, oil-based detergent, vinegar, or any other household cleaners on your wood floors. They may dull or damage the finish, leave grease marks, make the floor slippery, and/or make it more difficult to clean. Wipe floors with a damp (nearly dry) mop and a cleaner that is recommended for hardwood floors.

Always clean your wood floor with a professional wood floor cleaning product recommended by a wood flooring professional and/or the manufacturer of your floor.  We do sell such cleaners.  Please ask us about them.

Normal exposure to sunlight will bring about changes in the shading of any hardwood flooring as it ages. With certain species of wood this change may actually deepen and enrich the color to become even more beautiful. Please ask us how this applies to your species of flooring.  Area rugs and other objects that block sunlight should be moved occasionally to ensure that this shading occurs evenly across the floor.

High heels, especially if worn or broken, and shoes with hard heels can cause damage to hardwood floors. Caution should be taken to avoid wearing this footwear on any hardwood flooring.

Use felt pads or other suitable floor protection under all furniture and chair legs. Chairs or furniture with rolling castors will leave indents in the floor.

Be very careful when moving heavy objects like furniture or appliances across hardwood floors. Felt pads, a blanket or an inverted rug may be used to avoid damage.

If you have pets, especially large dogs, keep their claws well trimmed. The pressure exerted on a hardwood floor from pets claws can cause deep scratches that some people may find unappealing.

Light scratches can be easily dealt with by using a touch up kit recommended for hardwood flooring. Please ask us if you are interested in purchasing a touch up kit for your floor.
